I was diagnosed with Dyslexia at an early age. Dyslexia is primilary veiwed as a reading and writing disabiliy, but it is much more. It’s numbers, music notes, symbols, road signs and directions. I have spent years trying to explain to people what this disability is without portraying myself as less than I am. Traditional academia has always been a struggle for me. I never considered myself as smart or gifted so I idealized people who were brilliant. It is no suprise that my favorite show growing up was Gilmore Girls. Two women, one intelligent daughter destined for the Ivy League, and one business savy mother who had her daughter young and still succeeded. Due to my desperate love of the show and my glorification of brillance I wanted to make a collection that presented a character with dyslexia in a role that was also an intelligent. I feel if more characters of intelligence were presented with having a learning disabiliy in film and media than it would destigmatize disabilites.
